you know what I realized?

newwavefeminism:

people get REALLY uncomfortable and even upset when I, or my friends, explicitly bring up race or racialized things. I even notice it on my blog but its way more visible in real life when you can SEE facial reactions and eye rolling. The odd thing is… no one realizes that when you live in dominant society as a marginalized group - most of the conversations, topics, things people discuss are actually only specific to “white” culture - but because of the society we live in we have the privilege of not realizing how just speaking about “regular” instances automatically “others” people who already live in the margins of society. But more importantly, when I face covert marginalization from the culture and articulate it through covert descriptions of race - people get reallly upset. “why does this have to be racial?” “why do you have to make this about race?” You made it about race, sweetheart - you just have the privilege of not realizing it, and the entitlement to actually TELL me to stop infringing on your ability to further ignore race, my experiences, and my life.
