i’m kinda tired of people saying that we shouldn’t criticize mainstream second-wave feminism too much because it set the trajectory for current feminisms.  to that, i say bullshit.

saying that second-wave set the trajectory for what we have today assumes that the most marginalized and exploited women - such as trans women, indigenous women, women of colour, women with disabilities, queer women, fat women, poor women - needed middle-class, white, able-bodied cisgender women to inject sexism into mainstream consciousness in order to recognize and act on the fact that they, too, experience oppression.  that’s bullshit.  the racist, classist, colonialist, transphobic and trans misogynist methods and theories purported by second wave feminism have not helped the most marginalized and exploited women.  women on the margins have resisted in spite of hatred spewed by second wavers, not because of it.

OH MY GOD

i went into the bank and asked what day it was and the teller said “march 26th” so i asked “and the year?” and she kinda looked at me for a second before saying “2012”. i threw my hands up in the air and yelled “IT WORKED” before turning to leave.

THEN AS I WAS JOGGING OUT OF THE BANK SOME OTHER DUDE CAME UP TO ME LIKE “HOLY CRAP, YOUR MACHINE WORKED TOO?” AND WE HIGH FIVED AND RAN OFF.

Growing Amaranth and Quinoa -

afarmjournal:

Quinoa and amaranth are treated as grains although they have broad leaves, unlike the true grains and corn, which are grasses. Their leaves are among the most nutritious of vegetable greens, but it is their fruit that is usually meant when these plants are referred to as “crops.” And that fruit or grain is quite special. The protein content of these two foods has a essential amino acid balance that is near the ideal. They both come closer to meeting the genuine protein requirements of the human body than either cow’s milk or soybeans. They are high in the amino acid lysine, which is lacking in most cereals such as wheat, sorghum, corn and barley.

Both quinoa and amaranth are quite adaptable, disease-free and drought-tolerant plants. They thrive in rich soil—as long as it is well drained—but both will, once established, produce abundant harvests under dry conditions.

You want a physicist to speak at your funeral. You want the physicist to talk to your grieving family about the conservation of energy, so they will understand that your energy has not died. You want the physicist to remind your sobbing mother about the first law of thermodynamics; that no energy gets created in the universe, and none is destroyed. You want your mother to know that all your energy, every vibration, every Btu of heat, every wave of every particle that was her beloved child remains with her in this world. You want the physicist to tell your weeping father that amid energies of the cosmos, you gave as good as you got.

And at one point you’d hope that the physicist would step down from the pulpit and walk to your brokenhearted spouse there in the pew and tell him that all the photons that ever bounced off your face, all the particles whose paths were interrupted by your smile, by the touch of your hair, hundreds of trillions of particles, have raced off like children, their ways forever changed by you. And as your widow rocks in the arms of a loving family, may the physicist let her know that all the photons that bounced from you were gathered in the particle detectors that are her eyes, that those photons created within her constellations of electromagnetically charged neurons whose energy will go on forever.

And the physicist will remind the congregation of how much of all our energy is given off as heat. There may be a few fanning themselves with their programs as he says it. And he will tell them that the warmth that flowed through you in life is still here, still part of all that we are, even as we who mourn continue the heat of our own lives.

And you’ll want the physicist to explain to those who loved you that they need not have faith; indeed, they should not have faith. Let them know that they can measure, that scientists have measured precisely the conservation of energy and found it accurate, verifiable and consistent across space and time. You can hope your family will examine the evidence and satisfy themselves that the science is sound and that they’ll be comforted to know your energy’s still around. According to the law of the conservation of energy, not a bit of you is gone; you’re just less orderly. Amen.

Aaron Freeman “You Want A Physicist To Speak at your Funeral (via enflurane)

This reminds me of one of my favorite moments from Third Rock from the Sun, when Dick gives a eulogy for a fellow physicist:

“How can we honor the memory of a man like Leonard Hanlon? Well, he was governed by the laws of physics, as are all living things. It is a scientific fact that hearts and clocks slow down as they approach the speed of light, the point at which matter is converted into energy.

“Doctor Hanlon’s heart approached that speed on Friday evening, at 7:57, according to the coroner, converting his matter into energy, into pure white light. Though he is no longer with us, he is all around us.”

911 caller arrested after cops gun down unarmed black teen | The Raw Story
At a press conference Wednesday in Pasadena, California, police announced that they have arrested a man who called 911 earlier this week, claiming he’d been robbed a gunpoint by two black teens. Police responded to the incident with deadly force, killing 19-year-old college student Kendrec McDade after he fled from officers.
The 911 caller, Oscar Carillo, allegedly admitted under questioning that he lied about the firearm to trigger a faster police response.
No regard for human life whatsoever.

in these times it makes me afraid to bear children. My son will be a target for white men to empty their hatred upon. My daughters will be mocked, harrassed, and more likely to experience some form of sexual assult.
My babies could change the world or the world could take my children before they have the chance. Let us pray.

Can anyone explain the theory of relativity to me?

cage-veil-cunt:

saminal:

cage-veil-cunt:

My brother has tried to explain it to me like 4 times now and I just don’t get it.

How does time get longer… I can’t even…

First, it’s important to understand that everything is relative. Something that’s traveling at “50mph” is only measuring that speed relative to another object. You yourself are currently hurtling along at several miles per second relative to the sun, but I bet you feel like you’re quite still, relative to your chair.

There is no one stationary point from which to measure speed absolutely, so all measurements are relative.

Distance, however, can be measured absolutely. The distance between two points is definite.

We have calculated the speed of light at 300000000 meters per second, but this is relative itself. If you are traveling at half the speed of light and somebody shines a torch at you, the light you reflect still moves at the speed of light, relative to you, and relative to a stationary observer.

The difference between your speed and your observer’s speed means that relatively, light must be traveling at different speeds. Light can’t do this, though. It travels at 300000000m/s.

Speed is distance divided by time, and since distance is definite and the speed is constant, the only way to account for the difference between you and your observer is by altering time.

It’s very difficult to provide a decent illustration, especially off the top of my head while I ride the train home, but that’s the theory behind it all.

I don’t think I’ve cleared anything up at all, to be fair.

YOU EXPLAINED THIS PERFECTLY!! OH MY GOD!!

THANK YOU.
